Cromwells
Cromwells' attractive exterior holds all the promise of a
traditional English tea room with genuine dark beams, sprawling
wild flowers and spirited parasols with a life of their own.

Inside, however, we were presented with a very different reality:
the drab self service counter, despondent looking muffins in
shrink wrap cages, and then.... PING! Cups of tea in the
microwave. The microwave for crying out loud?

Trite, tired, overpriced and rudimentary, Cromwells encapsulates
everything that afternoon tea should not be. Ironically, its only
redeeming feature was that the indolent staff made no attempt to
hurry us home. Had we been of better humour, them, we could
have followed the example of the couple sat alongside us, who -
wisely refusing to part with so much of a penny of their
hard-earned - preferred to sit in the sunshine, scrutinizing the
daily papers.
