It was auspicious that at the end of what is probably the smallest, narrowest country road in the UK, we discovered by far one of the best cream teas in the West Country if not the whole of the land. As we stepped out of the car, feeling rather dishevelled after a traumatic encounter with an assertive large farm vehicle, we felt like we were in the middle of nowhere, because in fact, we were. We weren't the only people who were thrilled to find such a gem in an otherwise uninhabited part of the world. The tearoom was packed full with happy crowds sat at carefully spaced, cosy wooden tables; joyful laughter filled the air, and at every turn we were met with beaming faces and clotted cream smothered chins. Despite the frequent gusts of visitors, the helpful yet discrete waitress was swift in delivering a hot and tasty tea blend accompanied by warm and springy plain scones dribbling with lashings of fruity strawberry jam and faultless clotted cream. Before we knew where we were, the crumbs on our plates were from our third scone, and feeling rather glutinous we ashamedly spent half an hour strolling along the local River Tamar, not to absolve us from our greed, but simply to work up enough of an appetite to justify round two. |
