Back at Oxford, there was a certain bohemian snobbery attached to venturing up into hitherto unexplored Jericho. We remember the frisson of guilt attached to passing long and entirely studyless afternoons indulging in the quirky bars and cafe and returning later (and drunker) than anticipated with individually wrapped baguettes from Maison Blanc, on St Giles. Maison Blanc (in those days) was where your hoped rich aunts and in-laws would take you to feast on the indulgent patisseries they produce, seemingly by magic, from the small kitchen at the back. We are delighted to find an increasing number of links in this luxurious chain spreading like full fat butter over the toast of tea-time Britain. |
